Perhaps that’s your best measure when it comes to deciding whether you’ll go to Minions: Rise of Gru when the upcoming 2022 movie hits theaters this July. It’s unlikely to win over anybody unmoved by the previous movies and likely to deliver exactly what you’re expecting if you’ve enjoyed everything so far. Six months into 2022, it’s the funniest film Hollywood has produced thus far. Variety’s Peter Debruge found Rise of Gru to be predictable, but found its humor good enough to be entertaining. That’s not to say the film doesn’t feel like a binge: in fact, it feeds its audience mayhem and gags at funnel-down-the-throat, foie-gras-producing speed. This latest, 1970s-set installment… is an unexpected treat, and by far the series' punchiest and most polished entry yet.
